Thanks for the comment, Mike.

I had to read this post again. It has been over a year since I first wrote it.
I have not investigated, but I hear that there will be commemorative Lincoln cents next year (2009). Now only if the elimination part comes true...

I would like to hear any downsides you may be able to come up with. The only one I have heard is that long time collectors (not hoarders) of the US one cent would not have any new cents to collect. I would think that years ago, the people that collected half-cent, two cent, three cent and half disme coins felt the same sadness when their favorite series ended.

Wow - you certainly bring up some interesting points. I have honestly never even considered getting rid of the penny before, but you have me on the fence, now. Maybe I've just been sentimental. I'll have to do some more thinking about this and perhaps read your post again. This is the best piece I've ever read on eliminating the penny. You have certainly pointed out a lot of benefits to doing away with it. I'll have to do some digging and see if I can find any downside to it, now.

Thanks for a thought provoking piece. I really enjoyed reading it, being a long time penny enthusiast, myself.
